Aston Villa have confirmed that new manager Gerard Houllier will begin his tenure as Villa boss after Saturday’s Premier League match with Bolton. The news comes over a week after the news that Houllier would be taking over full-time from caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald. During that time, Houllier had been negotiating a release from his position as technical director of the FFF (French Football Federation) which has only recently been granted.
Caretaker manager and current reserve team coach Kevin MacDonald will manage the side in Houllier’s absence on Saturday but his future with the club is unknown. MacDonald had expressed a desire to stay on in the manager’s role in the long term but Villa chairman Randy Lerner decided to overlook MacDonald and appoint Houllier instead.
Houllier has returned to English football after a 6 year absence. He was a success in his first spell in England as Liverpool’s manager. During his six years at Anfield, Houllier won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups.
His first match in charge will be against Blackburn Rovers in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
